The gases in landfill sites, produced during the breakdown processes, make a considerable contribution to the greenhouse effect and also pose significant health and safety risks. On the other hand, they are often rich in methane gas and thus represent a potential energy carrier. In many countries there is enormous potential for producing electricity and heat from landfill gas. Furthermore, the continuing progress made by technology has led to laws and regulations being passed stipulating that domestic landfill sites must be degassed and that landfill gas must be burned off in a high temperature flare.
