Environmental disposal of mine gas
Creating a safe work environment and reducing the carbon footprint are the key reasons for pre-draining gas from coal prior to mining. Gas that isn't drained can cause a safety hazard for underground employees and cause delays in production.
Once the methane gas is drained and captured, the gas must be burnt at a flaring facility, reducing our CO2 footprint by 21 times compared to free venting. The gas could be used for power generation or heat recovery.
